A Nigerian man, Ola Abimbola, 36, serving a 21-year sentence for kidnapping, blackmail, and false imprisonment, has been on the run for nearly a month after escaping from HMP Ford, an open prison in Arundel, Sussex, UK.
Abimbola was transferred early to the low-security facility under recent government rules aimed at reducing overcrowding in higher-security prisons. Previously, he would not have been eligible for such a transfer for another six years. Open prisons, or Category D institutions, are designed for inmates nearing the end of their sentences to help them reintegrate into society.
He reportedly absconded around 8 a.m. on October 10, just weeks after his transfer. Sussex Police have since launched a comprehensive search operation, sharing information on social media and urging the public not to approach him. Anyone with information is advised to contact emergency services immediately.
The escape has intensified scrutiny of the UK prison system, following recent cases involving the mistaken release of foreign offenders and other high-profile absconders. Critics, including members of the Prison Governors’ Association, have expressed concern over risk assessments, which they say have become overly procedural due to pressure on offender management units.
Justice officials maintain that all transfers to open prisons undergo thorough risk evaluations and that offenders who breach conditions can be returned immediately to higher-security facilities.
