The Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria has called on Nigerians living in South Africa to exercise heightened caution amid rising tensions in parts of the country. The advisory, released on March 30, 2026, comes in response to violent incidents linked to a controversial cultural event in the Eastern Cape.
The diplomatic mission warned citizens against posting inflammatory content on social media or making public statements that could escalate the situation further. It stressed that Nigerians should exercise restraint in both online and offline interactions.
In addition to social media caution, the advisory urged Nigerian nationals to moderate their movement and avoid areas where protests or public demonstrations are taking place. Citizens were also advised to remain alert when interacting with unfamiliar individuals.
The High Commission specifically recommended suspending socio-cultural gatherings and avoiding any form of public activism. “Stay clear of demonstrations or counter-protests and respect local laws and customs,” the advisory stated.
Authorities also cautioned against ostentatious displays of wealth, noting that such behavior could make Nigerians targets amid the volatile environment. Citizens were advised to maintain a low profile at all times.
The advisory follows violent clashes in East London and other areas, where vehicles and properties belonging to foreign nationals were reportedly destroyed. Security operatives had to intervene to restore order as tensions escalated.
The High Commission reiterated that it had no involvement in or approval of the disputed cultural event, emphasizing that such activities are symbolic and do not carry political authority outside their cultural context.
Nigerians were encouraged to report any threats to local law enforcement and maintain close communication with the High Commission offices in Pretoria and Johannesburg for guidance and support during the unrest.
