Germany Moves Student Visa Processing to Lagos VFS Centre

The German government has officially announced that all student visa applications from Nigeria will now be handled exclusively through a visa application centre in Lekki, Lagos. The move marks a shift from the previous system where applications could be submitted at the German consulate.

According to the announcement, prospective students must first register online to secure an appointment. Once an appointment is confirmed, applicants will be invited to the VFS Global centre in Lekki to submit documents and provide biometric data.

The centre is operated by VFS Global on behalf of the German missions in Nigeria. It is equipped to handle all procedures necessary for student visa processing, including document verification, fingerprinting, and other related services.

The new arrangement was officially launched on March 25, 2026, by Deputy Consul General Gerald Wolf and VFS Global General Manager Operations Stephen Kubasu. The initiative is aimed at making the application process more streamlined and efficient for Nigerian students.

Germany has experienced a growing influx of international students in recent years. In the 2024/25 winter semester, German universities enrolled approximately 402,000 foreign students, a 6% increase compared to the previous academic year.

Officials believe that centralising visa processing in Lagos will help reduce delays and improve overall service quality. It also provides a single point of contact for students, making the process less cumbersome and more transparent.

Applicants are advised to consult the VFS Global website for full guidance on registration, document requirements, and the scheduling of appointments. The embassy emphasised that no applications will be accepted directly at the consulate under this new system.

The development is expected to significantly enhance accessibility and efficiency for Nigerians seeking higher education opportunities in Germany, reflecting the country’s commitment to international academic collaboration and support for prospective students.
