Nigeria Secures Diplomatic Approval from 10 Countries for New Envoys

The Federal Government has received formal diplomatic clearance from ten countries for its newly appointed ambassadors-designate, marking progress in Nigeria’s ongoing foreign service reorganisation.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, approvals have been granted by the United States, United Kingdom, France, Ireland, Qatar, Benin Republic, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Senegal, and Sierra Leone. The process, which requires host countries to accept incoming envoys, is still underway for several other postings.

Officials confirmed that arrangements for an induction programme will be announced once all necessary approvals are finalised and endorsed by the Presidency.

However, clearance is still pending for some nominees, including those assigned to Germany and Mexico, indicating that negotiations with certain host nations are yet to be concluded.

The current diplomatic reshuffle follows a directive issued in 2023 for the recall of all Nigerian ambassadors, both career and non-career. The move was part of broader efforts to restructure the country’s foreign representation.

Subsequently, the nomination process began in late 2025, with dozens of candidates screened and confirmed by the Senate. Earlier in 2026, the President approved a fresh round of postings involving both career diplomats and political appointees to missions across the world and multilateral institutions.

The latest approvals signal gradual restoration of Nigeria’s diplomatic presence abroad after months of transition.
