A 32-year-old Nigerian national, Christian Promise, has died while in police custody in India, prompting an official investigation by authorities in New Delhi.

Promise, who had travelled to India on a student visa, was reportedly apprehended on Sunday in the Rajouri Garden area of West Delhi by a team of police officers over a traffic violation. According to local reports, he was riding a scooter against traffic when officers attempted to stop him.

Police sources said the situation escalated when the Nigerian allegedly collided with a police motorcycle, causing him to fall and sustain injuries. He was said to have attempted to escape on foot but fell again before being arrested by officers at the scene.

Authorities further disclosed that while being transported to a police facility, Promise began to complain of discomfort and signs of distress, raising concerns about his condition.

He was subsequently rushed to Guru Gobind Singh Hospital for medical attention, where he was pronounced dead by attending doctors shortly after arrival.

Following the incident, a magistrate court in New Delhi has directed that a formal investigation be conducted to determine the circumstances surrounding his death in custody.

Police officials also indicated that a post-mortem examination would be carried out, pending approval from the deceased’s family or representatives of the Nigerian diplomatic mission in India.

The incident adds to ongoing concerns about the treatment of foreign nationals in custody, as authorities work to establish the exact cause of death.
