The Nigerian Consulate General in Johannesburg has demanded the swift arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the killing of a Nigerian national, Emeka Clement Uzor, in Randburg, Johannesburg. The mission described the incident as a grave crime that has further heightened concerns about the safety of Nigerians living in South Africa.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, the Consulate disclosed that Uzor was killed on February 8, 2026, in the Windsor East area of Randburg. The killing was described as shocking and deeply distressing, not only to the victim’s family but also to the wider Nigerian community and diplomatic circles in the country.

According to the Consulate, the deceased was allegedly attacked by a gang reportedly led by a South African national identified as Xolani Khumalo. The mission condemned the act in strong terms, insisting that such violence is unacceptable under any circumstances and must be addressed decisively by law enforcement authorities.

The Consulate noted that the incident has once again brought to the fore longstanding concerns over the safety of Nigerians and other foreign nationals in South Africa. It also criticised what it described as a growing pattern of profiling and stigmatisation of law-abiding Nigerians as criminals, warning that such narratives fuel hostility and violence.

While condemning the killing, the Nigerian mission said it has been in close engagement with South African authorities and expressed cautious optimism over the progress of investigations. It added that it had received assurances that those responsible for the crime would be identified and brought to justice.

The Consulate stressed that regardless of any allegations that may have preceded the incident, no individual or group has the right to take the law into their own hands. It reaffirmed that all suspects are entitled to the presumption of innocence and a fair hearing before a competent court, while firmly rejecting all forms of extra-judicial killings.

The mission urged Nigerians residing in South Africa to remain calm and law-abiding as investigations continue. It also extended condolences to the family of the deceased, assuring them that the Consulate will continue to uphold its mandate of protecting the welfare and rights of Nigerians in South Africa amid recurring reports of attacks on foreign nationals.
