A Nigerian athlete and graduate student, Oluwabukola Pereira, has been killed following a shooting incident during an alleged robbery at a car service centre in Lockland.

Pereira, 30, was reportedly working as a cashier at the business when an armed suspect allegedly stole about $1,500 from the establishment. Witness accounts indicated that she attempted to pursue the suspect after the robbery before she was shot twice.

Authorities in Ohio confirmed that investigations into the May 8 incident are ongoing, although officials have yet to publicly establish a definitive motive behind the attack.

A colleague of the deceased, Don Simpson, said Pereira tried to stop the fleeing suspect before the situation turned deadly. According to him, the suspect opened fire while escaping from the scene.

Originally from Lagos, Pereira was known for her achievements in middle-distance athletics before relocating to the United States for academic and professional opportunities. She had previously competed in athletics championships in Nigeria.

At the time of her death, she was studying for a Master of Business Administration degree at Xavier University and was reportedly close to completing the programme.

Business executive James Lafferty, who reportedly helped facilitate her move to the United States after discovering her athletic talent, described Pereira as determined and hardworking. He said she arrived in America on a scholarship with limited financial means but remained focused on building a better future.

Pereira also earned a bachelor’s degree from Southwest Baptist University and later completed a master’s degree in communication at University of Texas at El Paso.

Her death has generated reactions from members of the Nigerian community in the United States, as friends and associates continue to mourn the loss of an athlete and scholar whose life was cut short.
