U.S.-Based Nigerian Charged Over Fatal Hit-and-Run in Texas

A Nigerian resident in the United States, identified as Godspower Oniovosa, has been charged following a fatal hit-and-run incident that claimed the life of a pedestrian in Houston.
Authorities said the incident occurred in the early hours of May 10 along South State Highway 6, where the 50-year-old was allegedly driving a black Land Rover Range Rover Sport when the vehicle struck a male pedestrian crossing the intersection.
Investigators disclosed that the driver failed to stop after the collision or provide emergency assistance to the victim. Emergency responders later arrived at the scene and confirmed the pedestrian dead.
According to police findings, the damaged vehicle was later discovered abandoned with severe front-end damage. Officers subsequently traced and detained Mr Oniovosa before returning him to the crash location for further investigation.
Following consultations with prosecutors in Harris County, authorities charged him with failure to stop and render aid involving death, an offence tied to fatal hit-and-run incidents under Texas law.
Officials from the vehicular crimes division handling the investigation stated that the identity of the deceased has not yet been made public as authorities continue efforts to notify the victim’s relatives.
The development comes amid another recent case involving a Nigerian national in Texas. Weeks earlier, a correctional officer identified as Ayodele Abiodun Afosi was also arrested over allegations linked to leaving the scene of an accident shortly after being employed by the Texas prison system.
