Nigerian leaders have spotlighted women’s empowerment on the global stage during the second edition of Nigerian Women’s Day, held in New York City alongside the 70th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (UNCSW70).
The event, spearheaded by the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, brought together policymakers, diplomats, entrepreneurs, gender advocates, artists, and members of the Nigerian diaspora.
Discussions centred on gender equality, economic inclusion, and family resilience.
Deputy UN Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed engaged in high-level dialogue with Nigerian officials, linking national ambitions with international gender agendas. Panel sessions covered women in governance, economic leadership, and positive masculinity, while live cultural performances and art demonstrations highlighted African creativity.
Sulaiman-Ibrahim emphasised Nigeria’s nine-pillar Renewed Hope Social Impact Interventions 774 framework, aimed at reaching women across all local government areas. She called for stronger global partnerships, increased funding, and coordinated action, noting that investment in women is an economic, security, and development imperative.
The event reaffirmed the critical role of women and families in national and international development, with diaspora Nigerians actively participating in shaping the discussions and commitments for future gender-focused initiatives.
