The Federal Government has announced plans to strengthen its migration partnership with the United Kingdom through a review and update of the existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on migration management and returns.
Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, disclosed this in Abuja during a meeting with the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery. He said both countries are working toward finalising a revised agreement that reflects current migration realities and mutual priorities.
According to the minister, the updated MoU is expected to promote lawful, orderly and humane migration processes while reinforcing security collaboration between the two nations. He noted that migration governance remains a shared responsibility requiring coordinated action.
Tunji-Ojo stressed that Nigeria views migration management as a strategic component of its broader security cooperation with the UK. He added that the partnership has evolved over more than two decades, particularly in areas such as intelligence exchange and technical support.
The minister highlighted ongoing reforms within Nigeria’s immigration framework, including efforts to modernise documentation systems, improve passport administration and enhance border management. These measures, he said, are designed to facilitate legitimate travel while protecting national interests.
He further explained that the government is determined to maintain a balance between effective border control and economic growth, ensuring that migration policies support investment and broader economic reforms.
In his remarks, Montgomery commended Nigeria’s policy direction and expressed confidence in the renewed engagement. He described the discussions as constructive and solution-driven, noting that efficient and predictable systems are vital to achieving shared migration and security goals.
