Nigeria Targets Young Diaspora Athletes in New UK Talent Hunt Initiative

Nigeria has launched a fresh international talent search aimed at discovering and developing young athletes of Nigerian heritage living abroad, with a strong focus on the United Kingdom.
The programme, driven by the National Sports Commission, is designed to identify promising sports talents early in their careers and integrate them into Nigeria’s long-term athletic development pipeline. Officials say the move is a response to concerns about declining grassroots talent and the need to secure future international competitiveness.
At the centre of the initiative is a newly formed diaspora-focused committee, which recently held its inaugural strategy session in the UK. The meeting brought together sports administrators and technical experts from multiple countries to outline a structured pathway for identifying and nurturing young prospects.
Speaking at the session, the Commission’s leadership stressed the importance of building a consistent pipeline of athletes from a young age, rather than waiting until they reach elite levels before engagement. The approach is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s representation across global competitions.
As part of its rollout, the committee plans to actively scout athletes at major school-level and youth sporting events across the UK. These competitions are widely regarded as key platforms for discovering emerging talent in athletics and other sports.
In addition, organisers are preparing a special multi-sport showcase event in London later this year. The event will serve as a final selection stage for athletes expected to represent a proposed diaspora team at upcoming national competitions in Nigeria.
To ensure continuity and long-term commitment, the initiative will also establish a dedicated support structure to monitor athletes’ progress, provide mentorship, and assist with career development. This includes offering guidance during setbacks such as injuries and helping athletes maintain strong ties with Nigeria.
The scouting effort will be supported by a team of experienced former athletes and sports professionals tasked with identifying talent across different regions. Authorities believe their expertise will be critical in building trust and attracting young athletes to represent Nigeria early in their careers.
