Nigeria Pledges Stronger Protection for Citizens Abroad at Global Migration Forum

The Nigerian government has renewed its commitment to improving the welfare and protection of citizens living overseas while deepening diaspora participation in national development effort.
Speaking at the International Migration Review Forum (IMRF 2026) held at the United Nations headquarters in New York City, Nigeria’s Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Bernard Doro, said Nigerians abroad remain important contributors to the country’s economic growth through investments, remittances, entrepreneurship, and professional expertise.
According to him, initiatives such as diaspora investment programmes and specialised financial platforms are being strengthened to encourage greater participation from Nigerians overseas.
Doro explained that the Federal Government is working to create stronger engagement channels that will allow diaspora communities to play a bigger role in national development. The minister also stressed the need for countries to adopt more coordinated and sustainable migration policies capable of addressing humanitarian concerns and improving protection systems for migrants. He noted that migration management should move beyond emergency responses and focus on long-term development and collaboration.
He further encouraged global stakeholders at the forum to share practical ideas and scalable solutions that can improve migration governance and support inclusive growth across nations.
The IMRF 2026 gathering, which runs from May 5 to May 8, brings together government officials, development institutions, civil society groups, and international partners to review progress on global migration agreements and discuss future policy directions.
Nigeria maintained that its diaspora engagement strategy aligns with the Renewed Hope agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which seeks to strengthen international partnerships and expand opportunities for Nigerians both at home and abroad.
