Speaking during a courtesy visit by the Brazilian Ambassador to Nigeria, Carlos Garcete, to the Federal Ministry of Environment in Abuja, Minister of Environment, Alhaji Balarabe Lawal, described the partnership between both countries as longstanding and mutually beneficial. He noted that the upcoming COP30 would serve as a major platform to strengthen cooperation in tackling global climate challenges.

According to Lawal, the bilateral engagement between Nigeria and Brazil aligns with the objectives of the Paris Agreement, particularly on issues of climate change adaptation, carbon reduction, biodiversity conservation, and ecosystem restoration. He emphasized that both countries, endowed with vast natural resources and rich ecological diversity, have a shared responsibility in promoting sustainable environmental practices.

“Nigeria and Brazil have enjoyed a long history of cooperation in trade, culture, and tourism since Nigeria’s Independence,” Lawal said. “Brazil’s experience in sustainable forestry and renewable energy offers valuable lessons that can further support Nigeria’s environmental goals.”

The minister also expressed optimism that both governments would expand their collaboration in emerging areas such as green energy transition, environmental technology exchange, and climate financing, which are critical to achieving national and global environmental targets.

Lawal further commended the Brazilian government for resuming direct flights to Nigeria, describing the move as a catalyst for economic integration, people-to-people exchange, and tourism development between the two nations.

He also congratulated Brazil on securing the hosting rights of both the COP30 and the G20 Summit, applauding the country’s leadership in championing global climate action.

“Brazil’s hosting of COP30 is a testament to its strong environmental leadership. Nigeria looks forward to contributing meaningfully to discussions and partnerships that will drive impactful climate solutions,” Lawal added.

On his part, Ambassador Carlos Garcete reiterated Brazil’s readiness to work closely with Nigeria to enhance cooperation in environmental management, agricultural sustainability, and biodiversity protection. He said the Brazilian government recognizes Nigeria as a strategic partner in Africa and is committed to fostering a relationship that yields tangible results for both nations.

The meeting underscored the growing importance of South-South cooperation in addressing global environmental and development challenges. Both sides expressed optimism that the partnership will translate into joint projects, knowledge exchange programmes, and policy alignment during and after the COP30 conference.
