Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NiDO)-Worldwide has welcomed the Federal Government’s plan to introduce a comprehensive legal framework for regulating Artificial Intelligence (AI) and data systems in Nigeria.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the group said the move is a necessary step toward positioning Nigeria as a competitive player in the global digital economy. NiDO-Worldwide described the proposed National Digital Economy and E-Governance Bill, 2024, as a key policy instrument that can drive innovation, improve public service delivery, and strengthen governance.
The organisation noted that the legislation, if properly implemented, would help promote transparency, accountability, and efficiency across public institutions while encouraging fair competition and export-driven digital services.
NiDO-Worldwide also urged the government to ensure that the bill is enacted with clear ethical and security standards, stressing that the success of the framework depends on responsible implementation and continuous stakeholder engagement.
The group highlighted that Nigerians living abroad possess expertise in AI policy, cybersecurity, fintech, healthtech, and other emerging technologies, and offered to support the government with technical insights and capacity-building.
It further called for inclusive collaboration involving industry experts, academia, civil society, and the diaspora to ensure the law meets international best practices and addresses local realities.
NiDO-Worldwide said the adoption of the framework would not only enhance investor confidence but also protect citizens and strengthen Nigeria’s digital reputation globally.
The organisation concluded by expressing readiness to work with policymakers as the bill progresses toward becoming law.
