The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has strongly condemned the recent killing of two Nigerian traders in South Africa, describing the incident as “barbaric, senseless, and intolerable.”

Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of NiDCOM, issued the statement following reports that two Nigerian nationals identified as Austin and Ayo were shot dead at close range by masked gunmen in Durban.

This latest unprovoked killing is condemnable. It is yet another reminder of the growing insecurity Nigerian nationals face in South Africa,” Dabiri-Erewa said in a statement released by the Commission’s spokesperson, Abdur-Rahman Balogun.

She called on South African authorities to swiftly launch a thorough investigation and ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice. Dabiri-Erewa also expressed frustration that the early warning system jointly developed by Nigeria and South Africa to curb such attacks is yet to be fully implemented by the South African side.

Preliminary but unconfirmed reports indicate the gunmen stormed Austin’s office and killed both men Austin and his visiting friend Ayo on the spot.

Amid rising tension within the Nigerian community in South Africa, Dabiri-Erewa urged for calm and cautioned against any retaliatory actions. “We must allow the South African police authorities to carry out their investigations. Justice must be pursued through due process,” she said.

She further revealed that the Acting Nigerian High Commissioner in South Africa has demanded a comprehensive and impartial investigation into the killings.

NiDCOM extended condolences to the families of the deceased, with assurances that the Nigerian government will pursue justice to the fullest extent
