NiDCOM Boss Urges Nigerians Abroad Not to Forget Home

The Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has called on Nigerians migrating abroad to remain connected to their roots and contribute to the country’s development.

Speaking at a Ramadan lecture organized by No Dull Moment in Islam (NDMI) on the theme "The Intricacies of Japa Syndrome," Dabiri-Erewa emphasized that while migration is a global reality and a personal right, it should be a journey of impact rather than abandonment.

She referenced the migration of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) from Makkah to Madinah, stressing that he later returned to rebuild his homeland. Similarly, she urged Nigerians abroad to invest in their country through mentorship, business ventures, and community projects.

Highlighting the achievements of Nigerians in the diaspora, she noted that 70% of Black doctors abroad are Nigerians, and many are excelling in technology, business, sports, and entertainment. She cited Morotoluwa Ojomoh, the Super Bowl champion who recently returned home to a grand welcome, and boxing legend Anthony Joshua, who reconnected with his roots in Sagamu, Ogun State, in December 2024.

While acknowledging concerns about brain drain, the NiDCOM boss advocated for brain circulation, where Nigerians abroad gain skills and resources to contribute meaningfully to national progress. She revealed that Nigerian diaspora remittances exceed $90 billion annually, one of the highest in Africa, demonstrating their critical role in economic growth.

Dabiri-Erewa also advised Nigerians abroad to respect the laws and cultures of their host countries, urging them to be good ambassadors of Nigeria. She concluded by encouraging a shift in mindset from "Japa" to "Impact," reminding everyone that “Nigeria is our home, and we all have a role to play in its future.”
