North Carolina Governor Officially Declares June 14 as 'Igbo Day'

In a landmark recognition of cultural diversity and community impact, Governor Josh Stein of North Carolina has officially proclaimed June 14 as Igbo Day in the state.

The proclamation, dated May 21, 2025, highlights the rich cultural heritage, civic contributions, and unity of the Igbo people a major ethnic group from southeastern Nigeria who have established vibrant communities across the United States, including in North Carolina.

“I, Josh Stein, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim June 14, 2025, as Igbo Day in North Carolina,” the statement reads. The governor commended the Igbo community for its commitment to education, enterprise, cultural preservation, and civic participation.

The initiative was spearheaded by the Igbo Day Festival Organization of North Carolina, which was founded in 2022 with the goal of celebrating Igbo culture and strengthening community ties. The proclamation acknowledges the organization's efforts in fostering cultural exchange and unity among various ethnic communities in the state.
