The Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has criticised foreign embassies for holding on to applicants’ passports for extended periods after visa submissions.
Her reaction followed concerns raised by social media commentator Japheth Omojuwa, who condemned the delays, describing them as disruptive to travel plans and unnecessary for visa processing.
Omojuwa argued that embassies should return passports if a decision cannot be reached within a reasonable timeframe, stressing that applicants often face avoidable inconvenience due to prolonged processing.
Responding, Dabiri-Erewa aligned with the concerns, stating that applicants deserve better treatment and more efficient handling of their documents. She also proposed that visa applicants should receive refunds, at least partially, when their applications are denied.
The development highlights growing frustration among Nigerians over visa processing practices, particularly the impact of delayed passport returns on mobility, scheduling, and personal commitments.
