The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has praised the elevation of UK-based Nigerian, Thelma Ekiyor-Solanke, to a top international leadership role, describing it as a significant achievement for both Nigeria and its global community.

In a statement issued on Friday by the commission’s media unit, NiDCOM highlighted Ekiyor-Solanke’s emergence as the first Black International Chief Executive Officer of Women for Women International, a global humanitarian organisation focused on supporting women affected by conflict.

NiDCOM Chairman, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, commended the appointment, noting that it reflects the growing impact of Nigerians in diaspora spaces and reinforces the country’s reputation for producing globally competitive professionals.

She described the milestone as a defining moment, underscoring the increasing recognition of Nigerian talent on the international stage.

Ekiyor-Solanke is widely recognised for her longstanding contributions to social impact, particularly in areas such as women’s empowerment, sustainable development, and economic inclusion.

With decades of experience, she has built a reputation as a strong advocate for gender equity and community development across various regions.

In her new capacity, she is expected to oversee programmes aimed at helping women rebuild their lives after experiencing the effects of war and conflict.

Her leadership will focus on expanding access to education, financial support systems, and community-based initiatives designed to empower vulnerable women globally.

NiDCOM reaffirmed its commitment to celebrating and supporting Nigerians excelling abroad, noting that such achievements continue to inspire younger generations and strengthen Nigeria’s global footprint.

The commission added that Ekiyor-Solanke’s appointment further highlights the important role Nigerians in the diaspora play in driving change and shaping global development conversations.
