The National Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance System in collaboration with Ibeju-Lekki Local Government has launched the “SAVEMAMA” Rural Emergency Service and Maternal Transport initiative, aimed at improving maternal and newborn healthcare in rural communities.

The programme was unveiled during a community sensitisation and stakeholders’ engagement event held within the local government area. The initiative focuses on providing free emergency transportation for pregnant women and newborns, ensuring that expectant mothers can quickly access medical facilities during obstetric emergencies.
Speaking at the event, the National Programme Manager of NEMSAS, Dr. Doubra Emuren, emphasised that the programme addresses one of the most critical barriers to maternal healthcare in rural areas—transportation delays. She explained that timely access to medical care can significantly reduce maternal and neonatal mortality.
Dr. Emuren further noted that the initiative aligns with broader national efforts under the federal government’s emergency medical services framework to expand healthcare access to underserved communities. The programme forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen emergency response systems and improve health outcomes for mothers and infants.

Local government officials also encouraged pregnant women in the community to take advantage of the free service whenever necessary. Participants at the event received orientation on how to access the ambulance services through dedicated emergency channels, while maternal health kits were distributed to support antenatal and postnatal care.
