The Lagos Operations Office of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has successfully coordinated the return of 180 Nigerian nationals who were stranded in Libya, highlighting the federal government’s ongoing commitment to the welfare of citizens abroad.

The returnees arrived at the Cargo Terminal of Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, on the evening of November 11, 2025, aboard an Air Libya flight (registration 5A-BAE). The group comprised 147 adults, 45 males and 102 females, 19 children, 6 males and 13 females, and 14 infants, evenly split between males and females. Among the returnees, 46 individuals were identified with medical conditions and were promptly attended to by health personnel.

In collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and other key partners, NEMA ensured that the return process adhered to strict safety and humanitarian standards. Upon arrival, officials from the Nigeria Immigration Service conducted biometric registration and documentation to establish accurate records for smooth reintegration.

Beyond standard arrival procedures, NEMA provided the returnees with essential support, including food, potable water, medical care, ambulance services, luggage handling, counselling, and other logistical assistance. This comprehensive approach reflects a continued federal effort to maintain dignity and security for Nigerians returning from crisis-affected regions abroad.

Officials emphasized that operations like this are part of broader, ongoing initiatives to assist vulnerable Nigerians abroad, particularly those facing conflict, exploitation, or other risks. NEMA’s coordination with international agencies has facilitated the safe return of thousands of Nigerians in recent years, underscoring the country’s commitment to humanitarian responsibility and citizen protection.

The agency called on families and communities to support the reintegration process, particularly for those who may require ongoing medical attention, psychological counselling, or social services. NEMA reaffirmed its mandate to ensure that every repatriation is conducted with the highest standards of care, transparency, and efficiency.

This operation marks another milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to safeguard its citizens worldwide, reinforcing the message that the federal government remains actively engaged in protecting Nigerians wherever they may be.
