Tensions in the Gulf deepened on Monday as smoke was seen rising near the United States diplomatic compound in Kuwait, while multiple explosions echoed across the country amid Iran’s continuing military retaliation against American interests in the region.
Security warnings were issued by the US mission in Kuwait, advising citizens to stay clear of the embassy premises and confirming that personnel had taken shelter due to threats of missile and drone attacks. The alert followed a wave of aerial assaults targeting strategic facilities in the oil-rich state.
Kuwait’s defence authorities confirmed that several American military aircraft went down during the unfolding incidents. All crew members were rescued and transported to hospital for evaluation, with officials stating that none of the personnel suffered life-threatening injuries. Investigations into the crashes are ongoing.
Iranian military sources claimed responsibility for strikes on the Ali Al Salem air base, a key installation hosting US forces, and said cruise missiles were also launched toward maritime targets in the Indian Ocean. Kuwaiti officials reported intercepting a number of drones at dawn as air defence systems were activated.
In northern Kuwait, a power facility sustained limited damage after debris from intercepted projectiles struck a fuel container, igniting a small fire that was later brought under control. At Mina Al Ahmadi refinery, shrapnel injured two workers, though operations continued without disruption, according to the Kuwait National Petroleum Company.
Sirens wailed across Kuwait City as residents scrambled for safety. Some locals reported stocking up on fuel and essential supplies amid fears of further escalation. Authorities confirmed casualties in the wider Gulf region, with at least one fatality recorded in Kuwait as part of the broader hostilities.
The latest confrontation marks one of the most serious security crises in the Gulf since the 1990 Iraqi invasion of Kuwait and the 2003 Iraq war. Analysts warn that continued exchanges between Iran and the United States risk widening the conflict, especially as strikes have also been reported over cities including Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Doha and Manama, heightening regional anxiety.
