The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has underscored the importance of Migration Studies in shaping effective diaspora engagement and improving Nigeria’s migration management framework.
She spoke in Abuja while hosting a delegation from the Centre for Migration Studies of the University of Abuja during an academic visit to the Commission’s headquarters.
Dabiri-Erewa described migration research as a critical tool for evidence-based policymaking, noting that structured academic input can enhance institutional capacity and promote better coordination in diaspora affairs.
Leader of the delegation and Director of the Centre, Dr. Ifunanya Daniels, said the visit was designed to give postgraduate students practical exposure to migration governance, bridging the gap between theory and real-world administration.
According to her, the Centre was established to strengthen research, policy dialogue, and scholarly engagement on migration trends affecting Nigeria and the global community. She added that partnerships with relevant government agencies are central to achieving those goals.
The Centre’s Coordinator, Dr. Peter Adeyanju, explained that field engagements such as the visit enable students to gain deeper insight into migration policy implementation. He disclosed that admission opportunities had been set aside for interested NiDCOM staff as part of ongoing capacity-building efforts.
Responding, the NiDCOM boss reaffirmed the Commission’s readiness to collaborate with academic institutions, stressing that continuous professional development remains essential to delivering efficient diaspora services.
The visit reinforced cooperation between NiDCOM and the University of Abuja, highlighting a shared commitment to strengthening structured migration governance and enhancing Nigeria’s engagement with its global diaspora community.
