LSMTL Partners With Market Stakeholders On Material Testing To Curb Building Collapse

The Lagos State Materials Testing Laboratory (LSMTL) has partnered with stakeholders at the Odunlade Building Materials Market in Coker to curb the rising incidence of building collapse linked to substandard materials. The sensitisation campaign focused on reinforcing quality assurance as a non-negotiable safeguard for lives and property.

Speaking at the forum, General Manager of LSMTL, Engr. Olayinka Abdul, represented by Mrs. Omolara Awosanya, stressed that materials testing forms the foundation of any safe construction process. She warned that compromises at the point of purchase inevitably lead to structural failure.

The agency highlighted that many building collapses across Lagos are directly tied to poor-quality inputs. Dealers were urged to collaborate with regulatory authorities and ensure that only certified materials are sold, while also subjecting their own market structures to integrity assessments.

Facilitators demonstrated procedures for accessing LSMTL’s comprehensive services, including soil testing, concrete testing, steel reinforcement analysis, and non-destructive testing for existing structures. Officials emphasised that testing should be viewed as an investment in safety and long-term business sustainability.

The engagement concluded with a commitment to establish continuous monitoring mechanisms between LSMTL and market leadership. The initiative aligns with national regulatory standards promoted by professional bodies to strengthen compliance and improve construction safety across the state.
