The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has celebrated female sanitation workers and staff members as part of activities marking the 2026 International Women's Day.

The event, held at the agency’s headquarters in Ijora Olopa, included free medical screening and special recognition awards for outstanding female street sweepers who have demonstrated dedication to maintaining environmental cleanliness.

Speaking at the event, LAWMA Managing Director, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, praised the resilience and commitment of female workers who play a vital role in keeping Lagos communities clean.

He announced that the Lagos State Government has approved a health insurance scheme for all street sweepers under the Ilera Eko Health Insurance Scheme, which will provide access to medical care for over 16,000 sanitation workers.

Several sweepers were honoured for their exemplary service, while partner organisations provided medical support, food items, and financial assistance to further support the welfare of the workers.
