Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the Managing Director of the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), has called for a radical shift in how residents perceive and dispose of waste. Speaking on a national television program, Dr. Gbadegesin emphasized that proper waste handling is the only way to ensure Lagos remains a livable city. He urged the public to move away from the traditional "collect and dump" mindset and toward a more sustainable approach.-

Central to this new strategy is the concept of a "circular economy," where waste is treated as a valuable resource rather than refuse. The LAWMA boss encouraged residents to begin sorting their waste at the source, separating recyclables like plastics and paper from general household trash. This practice, he noted, would not only reduce the pressure on overstretched landfills but also create new employment opportunities in the burgeoning recycling sector.

While advocating for cooperation, Dr. Gbadegesin also highlighted the state’s increasing reliance on enforcement to maintain order. He revealed that over 400 cases of environmental infractions were prosecuted in 2025 alone. One notable case resulted in a jail term for a man caught dumping waste indiscriminately, serving as a warning that the "polluter-pays" principle is being strictly applied across the metropolis.

The agency is also working to clear persistent "flashpoints" where illegal dumping is common. Dr. Gbadegesin noted that the 2026 budget would provide LAWMA with additional compactor trucks and equipment to improve collection efficiency. However, he maintained that government efforts alone are insufficient without the active participation of the millions of people who call Lagos home..

The LAWMA chief reaffirmed the authority's commitment to working with all stakeholders to build a healthier, more resilient state. He urged citizens to report environmental violations promptly and to support the PSP operators in their neighborhoods. The goal, according to Gbadegesin, is a cleaner Lagos that reflects its status as a leading African megacity.
