The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has successfully concluded a five-day Water Hyacinth Recycling Training Programme aimed at empowering women and youths in Eredo Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Epe. The initiative, which ran from January 19 to 23, 2026, equipped 50 participants with practical skills to convert water hyacinth into economically valuable products.

Implemented in partnership with Mitimeth, a social enterprise known for creative recycling and community development, the programme focused on turning the invasive aquatic plant into market-ready items. Participants were trained on harvesting, processing, and recycling techniques designed to promote environmental sustainability and job creation.

Beyond technical skills, the training incorporated modules on safety practices, entrepreneurship, cooperative development, and sustainable environmental management. These sessions were designed to ensure that beneficiaries could not only produce quality items but also manage viable micro-enterprises and contribute meaningfully to environmental protection.

Speaking on the initiative, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Blue Economy, Mr. Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, reaffirmed LASWA’s commitment to innovative solutions that improve waterway safety and empower riverine communities. Represented by LASWA’s Community Engagement Officer, Mr. Adesanya Saheed, he noted that transforming water hyacinth from an environmental nuisance into a source of income aligns with the Lagos State Government’s sustainability and inclusive growth agenda.

At the close of the programme, participants showcased various recycled products and expressed plans to form cooperatives and micro-enterprises. LASWA disclosed that over 450 women and youths have been trained across riverine communities in Lagos State, with plans underway to scale up similar initiatives statewide.
