The Lagos State Government has issued a strong warning to traders and market operators against unsafe fuel storage and smoking within markets, as part of renewed efforts to curb fire outbreaks across the state.

The Lagos State Safety Commission delivered the message on Thursday during a sensitisation campaign at Ayangburen Sabo Market in Ikorodu, led by the Director-General, Mr. Lanre Mojola, who reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to “zero incidents, zero loss, and a safer Lagos for all.”

Mojola, represented by the Director of Administration and Human Resources, Dr. Nike Akindele, expressed concern over recurring market fires linked to preventable causes such as faulty electrical wiring, improper generator use, poor storage of flammable materials, and weak emergency readiness.

He said the commission was intensifying public safety campaigns and deploying Market Safety Marshals who would act as first responders in identifying hazards and coordinating emergency actions within markets.

The DG cautioned traders to adopt safer practices, including proper electrical maintenance, responsible generator use, and adherence to emergency safety protocols during the busy festive season.

“Safety is a shared responsibility. I urge all shop owners to ensure proper electrical wiring, avoid overloading sockets, and switch off all electrical appliances after business hours,” he said.
“Every shop must have at least one functional fire extinguisher. Traders should also avoid open flames, unsafe fuel storage, and smoking within the market,” he added.

The event featured lectures by fire prevention experts and the inauguration of 12 Market Safety Marshals for Sabo Market, while the Iyaloja General, Alhaja Mutiat Ojulari, pledged to enforce compliance and promote a stronger safety culture among traders.
