LASG Urges Residents to Keep Lagos Clean During Yuletide

The Lagos State Government has appealed to residents to sustain proper sanitation practices during the yuletide, warning that poor waste management during the festive season could undermine efforts to maintain a clean and healthy city.

In a statement released on Sunday, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, stressed the need for heightened environmental responsibility, noting that social activities typically increase during the period, leading to a rise in waste generation across the state.

He urged residents to ensure that all forms of waste, including food remnants and animal waste, are properly sorted, bagged, and disposed of at designated collection points for evacuation by authorised Private Sector Participation (PSP) waste operators.

Wahab assured Lagosians that the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) is fully prepared to manage the anticipated surge in waste, adding that evacuation services will remain active and responsive throughout the festive period.

The commissioner restated the ban on patronising cart pushers, cautioning that their activities disrupt the state’s waste management framework and contribute significantly to illegal dumping and environmental degradation.

He also reminded residents to utilise LAWMA’s customer care lines to report sanitation-related issues such as illegal dump sites, black spots, and other environmental infractions within their communities.

Wahab further warned against storing petrol and other inflammable materials in homes, offices, shops, and markets, explaining that such practices heighten the risk of fire outbreaks, especially during the dry season.

Reaffirming the commitment of the current administration to a cleaner, healthier, and flood-free Lagos, the commissioner urged residents to support government efforts through responsible environmental behaviour, while wishing all Lagosians an environmentally conscious Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
