The Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation is taking bold steps to address the psychological toll of abuse. On Tuesday, the Ministry's Domestic Violence Unit organized a vital sensitization programme at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The event focused on providing mental health support and building resilience for survivors of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) across the state.

Honourable Commissioner Bolaji Cecilia Dada addressed the gathering, noting that the scars of violence are often deeper than what the eye can see. She emphasized that healing and psychological recovery are essential for survivors to successfully reintegrate into society. This initiative aligns with the "THEMES Plus" agenda, which prioritizes social inclusion and the protection of vulnerable citizens.
Facilitators from the Lagos State Employee and Wellness Centre provided expert insight into the various forms of abuse, including economic and emotional violence. Mrs. Giwa Silifat Yetunde urged participants to break the silence and utilize state-owned helplines to report incidents. She reminded the audience that unchecked violence can lead to devastating consequences, including long-term trauma or death.
The programme also delved into specific coping strategies for managing depression and trauma. Facilitator Mrs. Omobolanle Idowu encouraged survivors to seek professional help without the weight of guilt or stigma. Her message was clear: acknowledging the pain is the first step toward true healing. Participants were introduced to various counseling services and support structures available within the Lagos State health system.

Permanent Secretary Mrs. Rianat Ajibike Onigbanjo closed the event by praising the courage of the survivors in attendance. She reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to maintaining a safe and inclusive environment where victims can find the care they need. By amplifying awareness and strengthening support systems, Lagos State continues to lead the fight against gender-based violence.
