Lagos State has recorded a major victory on the world stage as its student teams delivered an exceptional performance at the 2025 World Robot Olympiad (WRO) International Finals held in Singapore from November 26–28
The delegation, comprising 17 students, officials and coaches, travelled under the supervision of the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Alli-Balogun. They represented Nigeria across several competitive categories, showcasing strong innovation capacity in robotics and STEM.
This year’s edition, themed “The Future of Robots,” was the largest in the competition’s history, drawing over 3,300 participants from 112 countries. The event provided a platform for young innovators to propose solutions for real-world challenges in sectors like agriculture, safety, sustainability, urban development and health. Lagos teams delivered standout performances across multiple categories.
Okesuna Junior Secondary School, Lagos Island, took 2nd place in Africa with its Smart Guard Bot, an AI-enabled robot designed to detect electrical faults and prevent fire hazards. Team members included Taiwo Oluwasemilore (13), Adegboye Esther (15), and their coach, Mrs. Dorcas Ogundipe.
Government Technical College, Ikotun, secured 3rd place in Africa with a solar-powered agricultural robot developed for precision farming. The innovation aligns with global sustainability goals and was created by students Izahben Goodluck (15), Olawoye Solomon (15), and coach Mr. Olasupo Kolawole.
In the senior Robo Mission category, New Era Senior High School, Surulere, emerged 1st in Africa, demonstrating excellent engineering mastery and coordinated problem-solving.
Their junior counterpart, New Era Girls Junior Secondary School, also impressed, finishing 2nd in Africa. The team was praised for its solid grasp of robotics fundamentals and collaborative execution.
Nigeria was additionally recognised at the global event for being one of the highest users of WRO learning platforms in robotics training.
Lagos State authorities say the results reflect years of strategic investment in STEM education, teacher development and robotics infrastructure. Officials maintained that the students’ strong showing demonstrates Nigeria’s growing relevance in international tech competitions.
The World Robot Olympiad is one of the world’s most prominent robotics contests, designed to inspire young people to pursue careers in science, engineering and innovation.
