Lagos Strengthens Audit For Effective, Efficient Service Delivery

The Lagos State Government is doubling down on its commitment to financial integrity. On Wednesday, the Office of the Auditor-General launched a critical three-day capacity-building workshop at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Alausa. This intensive training, themed "Achieving Effective and Efficient Audit for Auditors," is designed to empower public sector supervisors and team leads with the tools necessary for modern governance.

​During the opening ceremony, the State Auditor-General, Dr. Muyiwa John Adetola, reminded participants that they are the frontline defenders of public resources. He challenged the auditors to move beyond basic compliance and embrace a risk-based approach. By doing so, the state aims to eliminate financial leakages and build a more transparent system that the public can trust implicitly.

The workshop features a high-powered lineup of facilitators, including the Director-General of the Public Procurement Agency, Mr. Onafowote Fatai. Mr. Fatai highlighted the essential link between transparent procurement and overall financial health. His session underscored that an effective audit starts long before the money is spent, beginning instead with the very first steps of the procurement process.

​Expert facilitator Mr. Tom Isibor also led sessions focusing on modernizing the audit cycle from planning and execution to the critical follow-up stages. Through case studies and interactive scenarios, auditors are being trained to use data-driven insights to evaluate performance. This shift toward "value-for-money" auditing is expected to significantly improve how state ministries and agencies deliver services to the residents of Lagos.

The State Auditor-General concluded by reaffirming Governor Sanwo-Olu’s dedication to continuous professional development. As the workshop continues through Friday, the goal remains clear: to build a resilient and credible audit system. By strengthening these institutional watchdogs, Lagos State is ensuring that every naira is accounted for in the drive toward a "Greater Lagos."
