The Lagos State Government has renewed its call for collective action to improve the safety and efficiency of the state’s waterways. Authorities emphasized the need for a coordinated approach to ensure that commuters can travel safely and reliably across the state’s extensive water transport network.

During a working visit to the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) on Tuesday, Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, met with senior management and staff to review operational priorities, assess ongoing service delivery, and discuss strategies for enhancing water transport operations.

Osiyemi stressed that teamwork, professionalism, and innovation are essential for the success of water transport services in Lagos. He urged staff to work cohesively, maintain mutual respect, and remain committed to high operational standards to foster a safer and more efficient commuting experience.

“The safety of commuters remains our foremost priority,” the commissioner said, adding that continuous monitoring, adherence to regulations, and proactive management of risks are key to preventing accidents and building public trust in water transport services.

A significant portion of the discussion focused on the Omi-Eko Project, a flagship initiative aimed at expanding and modernizing the state’s water transport infrastructure. Osiyemi highlighted the importance of timely project delivery, emphasizing that collaboration and strategic thinking among staff are critical to its success.

The visit comes shortly after a tragic boat accident along the Nigerdock axis of the Igbologun Water Channel, which claimed six lives while four passengers were rescued. Officials noted that such incidents underline the urgent need for enhanced safety measures, rigorous staff training, and strict compliance with operational standards.

Osiyemi commended LASWA personnel for their dedication and resilience, assuring them of the ministry’s commitment to providing a supportive, performance-driven work environment. He encouraged staff to adopt innovative approaches to improve service delivery and strengthen the overall water transport system.

The Lagos State Government reaffirmed its dedication to fostering a modern, safe, and efficient waterway system. By combining strategic planning, professional conduct, and collective effort, authorities aim to build public confidence in the state’s waterways and ensure that Lagos remains a hub for safe, reliable water transport services.
