The Lagos State Government has announced a special three-month "amnesty" period for vehicle owners with faded or damaged number plates. Starting in January and running through March 2026, the cost of replacement has been reduced from ₦30,000 to ₦20,000. This ₦10,000 discount is available to both private and commercial vehicle owners.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu approved the rebate to help motorists comply with traffic laws without facing heavy financial burdens. Many vehicles in the state currently move with illegible plates, which makes it difficult for authorities to track vehicles during emergencies or crimes. The government hopes this price cut will encourage thousands of drivers to fix their plates voluntarily.

The Permanent Secretary of the Motor Vehicle Administration Agency (MVAA), Rasheed Muri-Okunola, explained that clear number plates are essential for security. Faded plates hinder the work of traffic enforcement and digital tracking systems. By making plates more readable, the state aims to strengthen its security architecture and overall road safety.

Motorists interested in the discount can visit the Pilot Centre at Oshodi One Stop Centre or any of the 140 MVAA stations across Lagos. The process has been streamlined to ensure that replacements are handled quickly and efficiently. Officials are urging the public to take advantage of this window before the price returns to normal.

The government warned that once the amnesty period ends in March, the fee will revert to the original ₦30,000. Additionally, law enforcement agencies will begin a strict crackdown on vehicles with unreadable plates. Motorists are advised to act now to avoid both the higher costs and future legal penalties.
