Lagos has achieved international acclaim by being named one of the top seven art destinations to visit in 2026 by Artsy, a leading global art marketplace. The city was recognized as the "commercial and creative engine of African contemporary art," joining an elite list that includes Venice, Sydney, and Doha. This ranking highlights the city’s rapid evolution into a major hub for global cultural tourism and artistic discourse..

A key factor in this recognition is the upcoming fifth edition of the Lagos Biennial, scheduled for late 2026. Curated by Folakunle Oshun, the event is noted for its thematic urgency and use of non-traditional urban sites. This year's theme, "The Museum of Things Unseen," will explore ancestry and cultural history through innovative lenses, drawing international art enthusiasts to the city’s dense and vibrant landscape.
In addition to the Biennial, 2026 will mark the official launch of the permanent home for The Àkéte Collection – Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. This institution aims to serve as a "living archive" for the African continent, preserving and showcasing the evolution of African creativity. This addition to the city's infrastructure solidifies its status as a permanent fixture on the global art map.
The renowned ART X Lagos fair will also celebrate its 11th edition in November 2026, continuing its mission to bring the international art world to Nigeria. Founder Tokini Peterside-Schwebig has been instrumental in creating a platform that allows young Nigerian artists to establish global reputations without leaving their home country. The fair remains a centerpiece of the city's annual cultural calendar.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu welcomed the report, noting that the inclusion of Lagos reflects the state government’s deep commitment to the creative sector. He specifically pointed to investments in the J. Randle Centre for Yoruba Arts and History as evidence of how historical narratives ground new artistic works. The Governor restated his vision to make Lagos the top destination for arts and culture in the coming years.
The city’s momentum is further sustained by a thriving community of galleries such as Nike Art Gallery, Rele, and Ogirikan. these spaces support artists who are shaping contemporary African narratives and engaging with global audiences. As 2026 approaches, Lagos stands ready to showcase its unique blend of political charge, historical depth, and modern creative energy to the world..
