The Lagos State Government has installed solar power systems in key tourism facilities in Badagry as part of ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure, reduce reliance on the national grid, and enhance visitor experience across heritage sites in the area.
.

The initiative, executed through the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, covers major tourist locations including the Badagry Heritage Museum, the Vlekete Slave Market, and the Badagry Tourist Information Centre. The intervention is aimed at ensuring uninterrupted power supply and supporting sustainable tourism development in the historic town.
Speaking during an inspection of the projects on Thursday, 24 January 2026, the Director of the Monuments Management Department, Mr. Ibrahim Ladejobi, represented the Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka. He stated that the installations were designed to create seamless and memorable experiences for tourists and other visitors.
According to Mrs. Benson-Awoyinka, the project became necessary due to persistent power supply challenges that had negatively affected operations at the facilities and generated recurring complaints from tourists. She explained that adopting alternative energy solutions would significantly improve service delivery and boost tourist patronage.

She further noted that the project was completed under the supervision of the Lagos State Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources to ensure quality, sustainability, and long-term functionality, reaffirming the State Government’s commitment to positioning Badagry as a prime tourism destination.
