Lagos State Health District IV has recorded a 95 percent coverage rate in the recent measles-rubella immunisation exercise, vaccinating 1,056,908 children across four Local Government Areas. The Permanent Secretary of the District, Dr. Abimbola Bowale, disclosed this during a review of the vaccination campaign.

According to Dr. Bowale, the district initially targeted 1,108,811 children between the ages of 0 and 14 but achieved 95 percent of the projection. The vaccination covered Apapa, Lagos Island, Lagos Mainland and Surulere Local Government Areas.

Providing further breakdown, Director of Planning, Research and Statistics, Dr. Titilayo Oni, stated that Apapa vaccinated 111,854 children, Lagos Island 209,740, Lagos Mainland 266,190, and Surulere 469,124. She described the outcome as a significant public health milestone.

Health officials emphasised that measles and rubella are highly contagious viral infections that can cause severe complications, including pneumonia, blindness and birth defects. They reiterated that the MR vaccine offers long-lasting protection and is critical in preventing outbreaks.

The state government had earlier flagged off the immunisation campaign in January, reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding children’s health and strengthening community immunity across Lagos.
