The Lagos State Government has announced that it is evaluating pathways for the city-wide implementation of clean energy solutions to strengthen climate resilience and drive economic development. This was disclosed at a one-day Lagos Energy Climate Action Implementation Workshop held in Ikeja.

The Permanent Secretary, Office of Environmental Services, Mr. Gaji Omobolaji, represented by the Director of Climate Change and Environmental Planning, Mr. Micheal Bankole, said clean energy adoption is essential for a fast-growing city like Lagos. He noted that unlocking renewable energy potential in the informal and SME sectors is critical to sustainable development.
According to him, the workshop focused on scaling up solar photovoltaic solutions for households and small businesses, aligning with the Lagos Climate Action Plan. He added that pilot initiatives were designed to translate policy commitments into practical, on-the-ground impact.
Mr. Gaji reaffirmed Lagos State’s commitment to reducing emissions by 20 per cent by 2025, 45 per cent by 2035, and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. He noted that the energy sector remains central to achieving Nigeria’s nationally determined climate goals.

In his presentation, the Consultant on Lagos Energy Climate Action Implementation, Dr. Segun Adaju, revealed that pilot projects were conducted in communities including Agege, Ikorodu, Yaba, Makoko, Badagry, and Apapa, targeting SMEs as a foundation for future residential expansion.
