Lagos State has established a committee to coordinate the final rites of the late Akran of Badagry, His Royal Majesty Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I.
The committee was inaugurated at the Akran’s Palace in Jegba, Badagry, by Secretary to the State Government, Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, on behalf of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. Members were urged to execute their duties with unity, focus, and dedication to ensure a fitting tribute.
Chairing the committee, Salu-Hundeyin thanked the governor for the confidence placed in the members and highlighted Badagry’s cultural significance, calling for strong cooperation to deliver a memorable ceremony.
She stressed that all members are vital to the process, in line with the THEMES Plus Development Agenda’s inclusivity principle. Resolutions and decisions will be formally recorded in the State Gazette and submitted to the governor for approval.
Princess Adetola Akran-Oketunde, speaking for the royal family, appreciated the government’s support, describing it as a fitting recognition of the late monarch’s lifelong contributions to the community.
The committee is composed of local government chairpersons, traditional and religious leaders, and the Lagos State House of Assembly member for Badagry Constituency I, Hon. Solomon Bonu, who all attended the inauguration and first meeting.
His Royal Majesty Wheno Menu-Toyi I, who reigned for 48 years, passed away in January 2026 at the age of 89. He was a prominent member of Lagos’ Council of Obas and Chiefs and played a key role in preserving Badagry’s cultural heritage and fostering community development.
