The Lagos State Government, in partnership with C40 Cities, has officially launched and handed over the Ikosi Fruit Market Biodigester Plant, a landmark project aimed at converting organic market waste into clean energy. The facility, unveiled at Ketu Fruit Market, represents a significant step toward sustainable waste management and climate action in the state.

Speaking at the ceremony, Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, described the project as a bold reimagining of waste as a valuable resource. He explained that the plant would convert organic waste into biogas for cooking and electricity, as well as produce organic fertiliser to support local farmers and strengthen the food system.

In her remarks, the Tutor-General/Permanent Secretary, Education Wahab noted that the market generates tons of organic waste daily, much of which previously ended up in landfills, contributing to methane emissions and environmental degradation. Through anaerobic digestion, natural bacteria break down waste in a controlled environment, producing biogas and biofertiliser in a process that supports the circular economy.

The initiative, implemented under the Climate Action Implementation Programme in collaboration with C40 Cities and UK International Development, reflects Lagos State’s commitment to translating global climate pledges into practical local solutions. Officials emphasised that clean markets lead to healthier communities, improved sanitation, and enhanced economic productivity.

C40 Cities Regional Director for Africa, Mr. Anthony Okoth, and representatives of Ikosi-Isheri LCDA commended the state government for its leadership. The project stands as a model of innovation and sustainability, demonstrating how local markets can drive green economic transformation.
