The Government of Japan has strengthened Lagos State’s cholera response capacity with a $1.7 million emergency support package aimed at preventing a recurrence of the devastating 2024 outbreak.

At the official handover ceremony held at the Lagos State Medical Store in Oshodi, Ambassador Suzuki Hideo reaffirmed Japan’s solidarity with Nigeria, stressing that preventable deaths must not be tolerated. The intervention includes projects implemented through global partners to enhance emergency preparedness.
Representing the State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, Dr. Ismail Abudus-Salam described the support as timely and strategic, noting that the supplies would aid cholera management and other diarrhoeal disease responses.
The intervention covers essential medicines, diagnostics, water and sanitation materials, personal protective equipment and capacity-building initiatives designed to strengthen surveillance and case management systems.

Health officials expressed optimism that sustained public education, environmental sanitation and strengthened global partnerships will position Lagos to detect early warning signs, contain outbreaks swiftly and progress steadily toward zero cholera mortality.
