An Igbo diaspora leader based in the United Kingdom has appealed to the Imo State Government to establish a formal diaspora liaison office in the UK, arguing that such a move would unlock investment opportunities and strengthen development partnerships.
The appeal was made by the President of the Igbo Council of Elders in the UK, Mr. Ejike Ikezuagu, who said a dedicated diaspora office would help bridge the gap between Imo State and its large community of professionals and entrepreneurs abroad.
According to him, the Imo diaspora has both the financial capacity and technical expertise to contribute meaningfully to the state’s growth, but lacks an institutional structure to coordinate engagement and investment initiatives.
Ikezuagu praised the current administration in Imo State for what he described as visible progress in infrastructure and governance, noting that recent developments had improved the state’s outlook and investment appeal.
He highlighted ongoing road rehabilitation projects across different parts of the state, describing them as critical to economic activity and ease of movement for residents and businesses.
The diaspora leader also referenced energy-related initiatives aimed at improving electricity supply, as well as programmes supporting small and medium-scale enterprises and youth skill acquisition, which he said were helping to promote entrepreneurship.
However, he stressed that more could be achieved if the state formally engaged its diaspora through liaison offices in key regions such as the United Kingdom, Europe, and North America.
He expressed confidence that such offices would not only attract foreign investment but also deepen collaboration between Imo State and its diaspora community, ultimately supporting sustainable development for future generations.
