A large crowd of protesters gathered on Monday at the Abuja headquarters of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, calling for an investigation into alleged financial impropriety linked to former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai.

The demonstrators, who assembled under the banner of the Mega National Movement for Good Governance, carried placards and chanted slogans urging anti-corruption agencies to pursue what they described as serious allegations involving about N432 billion. Security personnel stationed at the entrance of the commission’s premises prevented the group from entering the facility.

Addressing reporters at the scene, the group’s spokesperson, Muhammad Abdullahi, said the matter should be treated strictly as an issue of accountability and not politicised. He referenced findings by a 2024 ad-hoc committee of the Kaduna State House of Assembly, which reportedly raised concerns about the state’s debt profile, contract awards, and financial management during the previous administration.

Abdullahi noted that some former officials who served in that administration are already under investigation or in custody in connection with the allegations. He argued that due process should apply uniformly and urged relevant agencies to ensure a transparent and evidence-based probe.

Citing constitutional provisions mandating the fight against corruption, the protesters called on both the EFCC and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission to handle the case without bias or external pressure.

They insisted their demand was for lawful prosecution, not persecution, and maintained that the courts remain the proper venue for determining guilt or innocence.

Responding to the demonstration, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale acknowledged the group’s right to peaceful protest. He assured them that their petition would be transmitted to the appropriate authorities within the commission for necessary action.
