The Lagos State Health Service Commission (HSC) has convened its Y2025 Strategic Leadership and Financial Management Retreat for healthcare executives, with a strong call for ethical leadership, financial discipline and integrated service delivery across public hospitals. The two-day non-residential retreat, themed “Breaking Silos: Practical Pathways to Integrated Healthcare Delivery,” brought together Medical Directors of the 29 General Hospitals and other senior health administrators.

Delivering a keynote lecture titled “The Hospital We Want To Leave Behind: Leadership Legacy and System Sustainability,” former Permanent Secretary of the Commission, Dr. Ademuyiwa Benjamin Eniayewun, stressed that leaders must be transparent, truthful and principled to earn loyalty and trust. According to him, perceived dishonesty or bias in leadership can undermine institutional stability and lead to systemic failure
Dr. Eniayewun noted that true legacy lies in building hospital systems that remain sustainable, patient-centred and financially viable long after a leader exits office. He emphasised that due diligence, clear vision, financial involvement and exemplary personal conduct are non-negotiable tools for healthcare leaders.
Permanent Secretary of HSC, Dr. Cecilia Abimbola Mabogunje, in her opening remarks, highlighted the urgent need for collaboration among health professionals to break operational silos. She warned that demographic expansion, rising patient expectations and economic pressures demand stronger financial governance and disciplined management in hospitals.

The retreat featured lectures on litigation reduction, revenue optimisation, inter-agency collaboration, referral systems, AI integration and healthcare leadership. Participants also engaged in panel discussions, team-building sessions and award presentations, all geared toward strengthening service delivery across Lagos hospitals.
