
On Monday, January 20th, 2025, His Excellency Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State welcomed Hon. Dr. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), and Dr. Gina Paige, Co-founder of Africa Ancestry, during a visit to his office in Alausa.
Also in attendance at the meeting was Mr. Jermaine Sanwo-Olu, the Executive Assistant to the Lagos State Governor and Head of the Lagos State Office of Diaspora Affairs (LASDA). Renowned for his unwavering commitment to fostering meaningful connections and enhancing the diaspora experience in Lagos, Mr. Sanwo-Olu continues to champion initiatives that ensure inclusivity, support, and a sense of belonging for all diaspora communities in the state.
The meeting highlighted the importance of connecting people of African descent with their roots and fostering cultural exchange.
Governor Sanwo-Olu and the distinguished guests discussed potential initiatives to promote Lagos as a key hub for African diaspora connections and cultural heritage preservation.
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu also reaffirmed his commitment to positioning Lagos as a global hub for the African diaspora through cultural exchange and stronger ties with people of African descent worldwide.

Highlighting the importance of preserving and celebrating African heritage, the governor emphasized its role as a cornerstone of identity and unity.
“Our rich and diverse history is central to who we are as Nigerians and Africans. The work being done to connect people of African descent with their roots is not only commendable but vital for fostering a deeper understanding of our shared heritage,” Sanwo-Olu said.
He outlined his vision of Lagos as a beacon for the African diaspora, emphasizing the state’s unique position as a cultural melting pot.
Discussions during the meeting focused on enhancing Lagos’ role in promoting cultural tourism and supporting initiatives that celebrate African heritage.
Dr. Gina Paige commended the governor’s efforts, expressing enthusiasm about the partnership.
“Lagos is a vibrant center of African heritage, and we are thrilled about the opportunities to collaborate in celebrating this identity,” she said.
Abike Dabiri-Erewa praised Lagos’ leadership in diaspora engagement, describing the meeting as a significant step toward reconnecting the African diaspora with their roots.
