Ghana’s President John Mahama has hailed the nation’s diaspora as a key driver of economic stability, revealing that remittances from Ghanaians abroad reached a record $7.8 billion in 2025.

Speaking in his State of the Nation Address, Mahama described the inflow as the largest ever recorded in the country’s history, emphasizing its vital contribution to households, businesses, and national foreign exchange reserves.

The President attributed the record-breaking figure to the “enduring patriotism” of Ghanaians living overseas and growing confidence in the country’s economic trajectory. He stressed that these funds provide practical support to families and local enterprises without the bureaucratic delays of traditional aid.

According to Mahama, diaspora remittances are increasingly outpacing foreign direct investment and governmental support, demonstrating the unique value of private citizens’ contributions to national development. “These funds go directly to where they are needed most—into homes, schools, and businesses,” he said.

The government noted that the remittances are instrumental in stabilizing Ghana’s foreign exchange position, supporting everyday household needs, financing education, and providing seed capital for small businesses. Mahama described the diaspora’s contribution as a “quiet but powerful” pillar of economic growth.

Highlighting the strategic importance of the diaspora, Mahama called on policymakers to engage with expatriates more systematically, while preserving the unbureaucratic nature of their contributions. “Unlike institutional flows, these funds arrive without contracts, conditionalities, or delays,” he added.

Analysts say the 2025 surge in remittances reflects both Ghana’s economic reforms and increased global mobility of its citizens. The inflows are expected to continue growing, reinforcing the diaspora’s role as a stabilizing force in national development.

In closing, President Mahama lauded Ghanaians abroad as “our most reliable development partners,” noting that their consistent support strengthens the backbone of the economy and helps safeguard the nation’s long-term prosperity.
