The first group of Ghanaian nationals evacuated from South Africa has arrived safely in Ghana following renewed waves of anti-immigrant tensions that triggered emergency consular action by authorities.
About 300 citizens were received at the Kotoka International Airport in Accra on Wednesday, where government officials assured them of immediate reintegration support and structured assistance packages designed to help them resettle and rebuild their livelihoods.
Officials said the evacuation followed growing safety concerns for foreign nationals in parts of South Africa, where sporadic unrest has targeted migrant communities and foreign-owned businesses in recent weeks.
Speaking at the reception, senior government representatives emphasized that the returnees would not be treated as displaced persons but as citizens coming home under national protection. They added that a coordinated relief plan had been activated, covering welfare support, economic reintegration, and temporary assistance measures.
Authorities further noted that additional evacuation flights are being coordinated for other affected nationals still in South Africa, as diplomatic engagement continues between both countries to ensure safe passage and improved protection for migrants.
The government described the operation as part of its broader responsibility to safeguard citizens abroad while reinforcing Ghana’s commitment to humane migration and diaspora welfare policies.
