Ghana Summons South African Envoy Over Xenophobic Attacks, Seeks Safety Guarantees

The Government of Ghana has formally summoned Thando Dalamba, the Acting High Commissioner of South Africa, following a fresh wave of xenophobic incidents reportedly targeting foreign nationals.

Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, raised alarm over what he described as increasing harassment and intimidation of migrants, including Ghanaians, in parts of South Africa. The concerns were fueled by widely circulated online videos showing confrontations involving foreign residents.

One reported case occurred in KwaZulu-Natal, where a Ghanaian resident was allegedly confronted and asked to produce proof of legal status. The individual was also reportedly told to leave the country, a remark Ghanaian authorities have strongly condemned.

Ablakwa noted that such actions undermine the rights of lawful residents and risk damaging longstanding ties between both nations. He warned that repeated incidents could weaken the broader vision of unity across the African continent.

Although no casualties have been confirmed in the latest developments, Ghanaian officials pointed out that previous xenophobic outbreaks in South Africa have led to deaths and destruction of property. Reports suggest that some foreign nationals in affected areas have been advised to limit movement due to safety concerns.

The minister also highlighted the historical relationship between the two countries, referencing Ghana’s support during South Africa’s anti-apartheid struggle and the leadership legacy of Kwame Nkrumah in Africa’s liberation movements.

Ghana has lodged a formal protest and is calling for urgent measures, including increased security presence and firm assurances that foreign nationals will be protected.

In response, Dalamba acknowledged the concerns and stated that South African authorities are monitoring the situation. He added that security agencies have been deployed to maintain order and that those found responsible for any attacks would face legal consequences.

Ghana’s Foreign Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding its citizens abroad and indicated that diplomatic engagement would continue until concrete safety guarantees are secured.
