Foreign Nationals Not Responsible for South Africa’s Challenges — Nigerian Community

The Nigerian community in South Africa has cautioned against blaming foreign nationals for the country’s ongoing socio-economic difficulties, describing such narratives as misleading and harmful.
In a statement released on Thursday, leaders of the community expressed concern over recurring hostility directed at migrants, particularly Africans, noting that the situation reflects deeper internal issues rather than the presence of foreigners.
According to the group, challenges such as unemployment, inequality, crime, and poor public services are rooted in structural and governance-related problems. They argued that migrants, many of whom operate small-scale businesses in informal sectors, cannot be held responsible for these systemic failures.
The community emphasised that attributing national problems to foreigners distracts from the need for meaningful reforms and accountability within South Africa’s institutions.
Referencing historical ties, the group highlighted the role played by other African countries during South Africa’s struggle against apartheid. It noted that Nigeria, among others, provided political and financial support, stressing that such solidarity should not be forgotten.
On security concerns, the statement dismissed widespread claims linking foreign nationals to crime, insisting that criminal activity in the country is complex and often tied to organised networks, inequality, and institutional weaknesses.
It further pointed to concerns about corruption and inefficiencies within certain sectors, arguing that these issues require urgent attention rather than the scapegoating of migrants.
The group also underscored the economic contributions of foreign nationals, stating that many migrants help sustain local economies through entrepreneurship and job creation, particularly in underserved communities.
While calling on authorities to address rising tensions and protect all residents, the Nigerian community urged citizens and leaders to promote unity, counter misinformation, and focus on addressing the root causes of the country’s challenges.
Recent reports indicate a rise in tensions in parts of South Africa, with incidents of harassment and violence against migrants. The developments have raised concerns within the diaspora, prompting renewed calls for decisive government intervention to safeguard lives and maintain social stability.
