The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to the welfare of Nigerians abroad, assuring Pastor Benjamin Egbaji, a Nigerian cleric currently serving a 10-year sentence in the Republic of Benin, that he has not been forgotten.

Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, gave the assurance during a visit to the Cotonou prison facility where Pastor Egbaji has been detained since his conviction in 2023. He was arrested in May of that year and has reportedly faced deteriorating health conditions during his incarceration, including several hospitalizations.

Dr. Magnus Eze, Special Assistant on Communication and New Media to the minister, confirmed the visit in a statement released on Thursday.

Ambassador Odumegwu-Ojukwu, speaking during her meeting with the pastor, conveyed the government's message of concern and solidarity:

“I want to assure you that Nigeria has not forgotten you. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is aware of your situation. This visit underscores our commitment to citizen diplomacy. We are monitoring your case closely and ensuring due process is followed.”

Moved by the visit, Pastor Egbaji reportedly broke down in tears, expressing concern over his failing health and pending appeal before the Beninese judicial system.

Also present during the visit, the President of the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NIDO) in Benin Republic, Alhaji Mohammad Munir, described the minister’s visit as “timely and compassionate,” commending the government’s show of concern for Nigerians in distress abroad.

The Federal Government has pledged to continue engaging with relevant authorities in Benin to ensure Pastor Egbaji’s rights are upheld.
